Challenge: Without trust rails, food systems stay opaque: capable suppliers locked out, programmes without audit trails. SOFI’s healthy-diet gap (~2.7B) is also a market-access problem.

Get found. Get verified. Get trusted. Get paid.

SupplierAdvisor® is a supply-chain operating system built around a verified network of companies. It is designed to help African SMEs, suppliers and buyers do four things that decide whether a business grows: get found, get verified, get trusted and get paid.

Big Five Connect, part of the Empower side of Big Five Group™, runs SupplierAdvisor®. When an SME can be found, verified, trusted and paid, it can hire, grow and supply with confidence: empowerment in its most practical form, a fair chance to compete.

“Across Africa I meet business owners who make good products and give good service, yet struggle to be seen. What is often missing is access to markets, and the proof that opens them.”

Why join: a fabric of trust

Verification, peer stars, OTIFEF and RIAD risk live where you buy and sell, so bad counterparties show up before the next PO. Invite suppliers and customers, connect public buyers, and give consumers a path into verified brands: the same fabric of trust.

Multi-entity groups, clean data

Separate company workspaces, team roles and membership-scoped data: groups and brands stay clean, not tangled in one login. The same login can run a B2B or B2G company and keep a personal SA Member wallet; they never mix.

THE TRUST LAYER

Trust is earned on real trade, not claimed in a brochure

OTIFEF scores, peer ratings and verification live where you buy and sell, so bad counterparties show up before the next PO.

OTIFEF · On-Time, In-Full, Error-Free

Score every delivery On-Time, In-Full, Error-Free. Peer stars and RIAD risk logs follow the relationship, and ratings are bilateral after trade, not vanity reviews.

For a small supplier, that record becomes a reputation it can carry into the next conversation, rather than starting from zero every time.

The purchase-order loop
  1. Draft
  2. Sent
  3. Accept
  4. Deliver
  5. Rate

Purchase orders move through the same states on both sides. When the goods arrive, the buyer scores the delivery and rates the partner, and the score follows the company across the network.

School nutrition compliance — set once, enforced on the network

Big Five Connect runs SupplierAdvisor® so the Department of Basic Education can align school nutrition delivery across KwaZulu-Natal: roughly 1,800 service providers and approximately 6,000 schools on one verified operating fabric — where approved products, menus and compliance incentives live in the same place as trade.

Without a shared system, approved menus stay in circulars and inboxes while kitchens and contractors improvise. On SupplierAdvisor® the department sets what may be supplied and served; service providers and schools see the same rules — and are incentivised to comply — so learners get the nutrition the programme requires.

Department of Basic Education

Sets approved products and menus on the platform — one source of truth for what may be bought and served under the programme.

~1,800 service providers

Caterers and suppliers operate against that approved list, with visibility, verification and incentives aligned to DBE requirements.

~6,000 KZN schools

Schools on the network receive and serve from the same approved products and menus — compliance becomes the path of least resistance.

Compliance by design

How it works on the platform

  • Approved products & menus. DBE publishes what is approved on SupplierAdvisor® — products and menus the network must follow, not a parallel spreadsheet.
  • Shared visibility. Service providers and schools work from the same catalogue and rules as the department, reducing ambiguity and unapproved substitution.
  • Incentives to comply. Providers and schools are incentivised to stay inside DBE requirements — good behaviour is rewarded on the network, not only policed after the fact.
  • Nutrition that reaches the child. When the approved list and the kitchen align, learners are more likely to receive the fortified, programme-grade meals they need to learn.

Why it matters for learners

School feeding only works when the plate matches the policy. Connecting DBE authority with the people who buy, cook and serve — at roughly 1,800 providers and 6,000 schools in KZN — turns SupplierAdvisor® into a compliance and nutrition engine, not just a marketplace.

  • One network linking the department, service providers and KZN schools for school nutrition delivery
  • DBE-controlled approved products and menus as live operating rules — not paper only
  • Compliance incentives for service providers and schools to follow DBE requirements
  • Stronger assurance that children receive the nutrition the programme designs for them
  • A B2G proof point for SupplierAdvisor® that Big Five Connect can extend to other departments and provinces
FoodsConnectDirectAccessImpact

Service provider (~1,800) and school (~6,000 KZN) figures are approximate programme-scale estimates for this case study — not a real-time census. Product, menu and incentive rules are as configured with the department on SupplierAdvisor® and may evolve. Confirm live scope with Big Five Connect.

SupplierAdvisor®
CASE STUDY · SCHOOLADVISOR · SUPPLIERADVISOR®
9.4M
pupils fed daily under NSNP (reported programme scale)
18%
schools meeting food-handling rules · 6 provinces (reported)

Only about 18% of schools in six provinces operating feeding schemes meet legal requirements for food handling — leaving millions of learners dependent on kitchens that have not met the safety bar the law expects.

When millions eat at school, every kitchen must be on a compliance OS

South Africa’s National School Nutrition Programme is one of the largest daily feeding systems in Africa. The operational risk is not only what is on the menu — it is whether the kitchen that prepares the meal is legally fit to handle food.

Investigative reporting in August 2026 (News24) put a stark number in public view: of schools operating feeding schemes across six provinces, only about 18% meet legal requirements for food handling, while roughly 9.4 million pupils receive food through NSNP each school day. When kitchens are uncertified or under-inspected, learners carry the food-safety risk — and the Department of Basic Education (with provincial education departments) inherits a governance problem that paper directories cannot solve at scale.

Certificates expire. Inspections lag. Service providers and school kitchens improvise. Without a shared live register of kitchen readiness, food-handler competence, incidents and corrective action, non-compliance is discovered after the meal is served — if it is discovered at all.

How SchoolAdvisor helps the Department of Basic Education

SchoolAdvisor is the school-feeding module on SupplierAdvisor® (www.supplieradvisor.com) — the operating layer Big Five Connect deploys so education authorities can see, score and improve kitchen food-safety compliance in the same OS that already holds approved products, menus and supplier trade.

Department of Basic Education · PEDs

Set national/provincial kitchen and food-handling standards on the platform; see compliance heatmaps by province, district and school; drive remediation with a live trail.

Schools & NSNP kitchens

Govern kitchen compliance live

How SchoolAdvisor works on SupplierAdvisor®

  • Kitchen register & certificates. Every participating school kitchen is a governed site on SchoolAdvisor — certificate status, expiry alerts and legal food-handling requirements in one profile the department can query.
  • Food-safety & SHEQ controls. SupplierAdvisor® SHEQ patterns (incidents, hazards, NCR/CAPA, checklists) applied to school kitchens — holds and corrective action before the next serving day, not only after a crisis.
  • Competence & training trail. Food-handler training and role competence live next to the kitchen record so PEDs know who is authorised to prepare programme meals.
  • Inspection & audit packs. District and provincial inspections log findings on-platform; exportable auditor packs give DBE and oversight bodies a single evidence set.
  • Tied to approved products & menus. SchoolAdvisor sits on the same SupplierAdvisor® fabric as approved NSNP products and menus — so compliance is about both what is cooked and where it is cooked.
  • Incentives & escalation. Dashboards surface non-compliant sites; programmes can prioritise support, restrict risky offtake pathways, and reward kitchens that stay inside the rules.

Why it matters for learners — and for DBE

Feeding 9.4 million learners is a nutrition victory only if every plate is safe. SchoolAdvisor turns kitchen compliance into live operating data for the Department of Basic Education — so legal food-handling requirements are managed where meals are actually cooked, on the same SupplierAdvisor® network that already aligns products, menus and trade.

  • A national-to-school visibility model for kitchen food-safety status under NSNP — not scattered paper files
  • Earlier detection of expired certificates, failed inspections and open CAPA on feeding sites
  • Stronger assurance that the 9.4 million daily meals are prepared in kitchens the department can govern
  • One OS linking DBE/PEDs, schools, service providers and suppliers for both product rules and kitchen readiness
  • A scalable response to the public compliance gap reported across six provinces — designed for rollout, not a pilot spreadsheet

NSNP is led by the Department of Basic Education. SchoolAdvisor is a SupplierAdvisor® module for school-feeding programme operations (kitchen compliance, SHEQ, inspections, offtake context). It complements — and can share data with — the DBE approved products & menus network described in our KZN compliance case study.

FoodsConnectAccessImpact

Pupil count (≈9.4 million daily) and the ≈18% food-handling compliance figure for schools in six provinces are drawn from public News24 reporting (August 2026) and related public discussion of that story. They are external journalistic / programme-context figures — not Big Five audited metrics or a live census. SchoolAdvisor capabilities describe the platform design for how education authorities can address the problem; live configuration, provincial coverage and enforcement rules are confirmed in dated partner briefs with Big Five Connect.

BIG FIVE CONNECT · SUPPLIERADVISOR® MESSENGER

SAM — your always-on ops co-pilot

SupplierAdvisor® Messenger is Grok-powered intelligence inside the supply-chain OS. How-to guidance, trade walkthroughs, and operational answers without a manual — so African teams ramp, trade and improve on one chain.

Ask how to verify a supplier, raise a PO, check a lot, or run a school-feeding order — SAM answers inside the OS you already trade on.

SAM lives inside SupplierAdvisor® after you register or log in. supplieradvisor.com

How trust blocks risk — without a demo call

Connect · Trade · Inspect · SHEQ — live control on one chain.

01

Verified counterparties

Invite or discover a partner. Accept a trading handshake. Certificates and verification status travel with the relationship.

02

Supplier ratings · OTIFEF

Every delivery scores On-Time, In-Full, Error-Free — peer ratings and RIAD risk that follow the trading edge.

03

Traceability + on-chain

Lot pedigree for recall drills. Optional product passports and PO escrow when authenticity or capital must be proven.

04

Hold gates

Ship blocked on fail. QA holds, HACCP, and SHEQ controls live on the same chain as trade and stock.
